Irkutsk plague case: a quiet day with nothing new

Saturday 31 October 2026, published .

Several claims are circulating on social media. One says Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have tightened border controls, and another says the US State Department is urging more transparency; the facts we hold support both as things being said1. A third says there is chatter about a second death from plague; the facts support that the chatter exists, but nothing we hold confirms a second death2. Most posts we read today voice doubt about the official account rather than fear, and that doubt is reasonable: Russian statements remain unverified until an independent source confirms them, because Moscow has concealed outbreaks before.

What would change that is an independent laboratory confirming a cause, an explanation for why no test results have been published, or a new illness in anyone under observation.
