WHO still cannot say what killed the Irkutsk lab worker

Tuesday 20 October 2026, published .

WHO says it has no confirmed diagnosis for the death of Daria Shipilova, who was hospitalised with severe pneumonia on 29 September, and it has asked for more information on the case123. WHO reports that Russian plague tests on Daria Shipilova and on her contacts were negative, and that tests for other highly dangerous pathogens were also negative45. Those are Russian results, passed on by WHO, and no independent laboratory has confirmed them. We hold them as unconfirmed for the reason we always give: Moscow has concealed outbreaks before.

On the central question, today adds less than it seems to. WHO cannot fully rule out a link to the laboratory, but it says no confirmed evidence of a laboratory accident exists67. It found no evidence that the infection spread further, which is the most reassuring line in the day's reports8. Whether this was a localised accident or a wider failure of containment remains open. Nothing today settles it, and we see no reason yet for panic.

The noise is coming from China. A regional CDC staff member reportedly said information on possible plague cases would be confidential9. Social media posts claim two fatal pneumonic plague cases in Shanghai and Chongqing; we have checked these and nothing in our facts bears on them either way, so they remain unchecked10. A Shuangliu resident says a doctor did not order plague testing; that is also unchecked11. Chinese reports say the posts have triggered panic among the public12. The posts we read today were mostly worried or sceptical of the official account, and that scepticism is fair, though it is not evidence.

WHO does not recommend restricting travel or trade over the event13. Watch whether Russia supplies the data WHO has asked for (LOL!), whether any independent laboratory confirms the test results, and whether anyone under observation falls ill.
