The World Health Organization said it found no evidence of ongoing plague transmission and no additional infections12. It did not recommend travel or trade restrictions over the incident3. That is a statement about spread, not about the laboratory, and it is the most useful thing said today.
A report says tests for dangerous pathogens, including plague, were negative4. No one has seen the results themselves, and Russia's record of hiding outbreaks is why we do not take that at face value. Rostov's health office says no plague cases have been registered in its region5. Its further description of the situation as calm6 is reassurance from the same authorities, and we discount it for the same reason.
The question that matters is still open: a localised laboratory accident, or a wider failure of containment. Today's facts add a little, namely no further cases and no transmission found. They do not say what killed Daria Shipilova, whether she was exposed in the laboratory, or whether anyone under observation was exposed. On those points we have nothing new, and we say so plainly.
Most posts today doubt the official account of the death, and the mood has turned against officials. One claim that a pathogen escaped a Siberian laboratory and put people into isolation is contradicted by the facts7. A claim that a Trump-Putin call confirmed there was no outbreak is contradicted8. A claim that Taiwan may tighten border quarantine is unchecked, and nothing yet bears on it either way.
It is a quiet day, and we would like the whole thing to die out. Nothing new today pushes it back up, and that is all we can honestly report.
